Examples of Projects Undertaken

Cost saving

– Halifax Bank, set up, trained and led a new multi disciplinary team responsible for a major performance improvement programme within the bank, including cost reduction; Business process re-engineering and new ways of working.

Culture

– Inland Revenue, Led the project which successfully identified the staffing, cultural and organisational implications of the government decision to integrate 2,000 Child Benefit Agency staff into the Inland Revenue and achieved this on time integration without service disruption

Customer Service/Contact Centre

– Led the HR and training work-streams in the design, build and on time launch of Scottishpower's new customer service centre in Glasgow, serving 1.8m customers. This involved the closure of 9 small call centres, the migration of existing staff to the new centre, external recruitment of c400 new staff and the design and delivery of 16,000+ training in a simulated call centre environment

Downsizing /Rationalisation

– Successful completion of a series of projects for Smith and Nephew, downsizing four UK manufacturing sites into one in response to cost pressures from far east; Introduction of new technologies/new ways of working; Staff selection and training and development programmes for staff in their new roles

HR Transformation

– Led on behalf of the board, a radical review of Abbey national's UK HR function/services, resulting in the redesign of 45% of all HR roles; the introduction of new business partners and significant cost savings.

Similar Swedish based project for international manufacturing company, (Sandvik), involving HR teams from 40 countries, including the development of the new global HR strategy, organisational/job design, shared services and 'e' HR.

Joint Venture

– Identified and secured Joint venture agreement to the causes and solutions of organisational, performance and cultural failure of a major, (world top 10), oil and gas venture in Kazakhstan. JV involved US, Russian, Italian and UK oil companies. Worked both on site in Kazakhstan and with the UK JV board to achieve this.

Mergers

– Developed and successfully implemented a new European post-merger strategy, transition plan, and performance balanced score card for Pfizer's Development operations division, working in US, Japan and UK with the Development operations leadership team.

Led all HR aspects of the successful merger of the Audit Office and National Audit Office in Wales, to form Wales Audit Office. Including the design and negotiation of integrated terms and conditions of employment with staff unions; Senior partner appointments; New performance management scheme and pension scheme integration

New Ways of Working

– Developed with Pfizer in US and UK new approaches to the design of Global Drug development roles with the objective of reducing R&D development time, through improved team performance

Outsourcing

– Led the HR, Change and Communications work-streams of the successful outsourcing of Astra Zeneca's IT infrastructure services to IBM, managing a joint US, UK and Swedish team. This involved approx 1,000 IT staff, all of AZ's worldwide locations, and an eventual seven year contract with IBM worth several billion dollars.

Strategy/Organisational redesign

– Led the change and HR work streams for the National Assembly of Wales, as part of the £200m 'Merlin' programme to develop the future strategy and programme of work for Welsh government, to help NAW achieve its ambition to be the leading exemplar of devolved government in Europe. This included sensitive and complex negotiation, securing the buy in/agreement at the most senior government levels to new shared services; 'e' government channels; HR and change strategies.
